1. Problems with Multi-tier Subcontracting
Many IT companies use multi-tier subcontracting to secure the number and quality of people a project requires. This structure likely arises because projects demand a variety of technologies and expertise that one company cannot supply entirely with its own engineers.
Under a multi-tier subcontracting structure, project speed falls dramatically and high costs and lower quality become more likely.
2. Harm Caused by Vendor Lock-in
Behind this problem is the customer's complete dependence on the IT vendor and resulting loss of negotiating power over price.
If the IT vendor quotes a high price, the customer may be placed at a disadvantage in price negotiations. An IT vendor may also build a system with proprietary specifications to prevent a switch to another provider and keep the customer captive, sacrificing system quality and usability. These issues may ultimately hinder digital transformation (DX) at Japanese companies.
